Pain Management
Pain management is important! Pain is a symptom of many health problems and the sensation a person, dog, cat or other pet feels after surgery or trauma. If your pet seems to be in pain it is important to diagnose the cause of the pain and start treatment as soon as possible so at the first signs of pain call us at 714-871-3000 and we will get you in as soon as possible. Please do not give over the counter pain medications for pain management without contacting us.
Many human medications are very dangerous for dogs and cats
because dogs and cats metabolize drugs differently than humans do. There are many medications for pain, which we can use in dogs and cats and new drugs and therapies for pain become available frequently.
Pain control is very important and actually makes recovery from many conditions quicker. There are two types of pain control; medications and non-medication pain control.
Non-Medication pain control includes acupuncture, massages, support bandaging, splinting and warm and cold compresses.
Often medications are needed for pain control and at Sunnycrest Animal Care Center we employ a number of different pain control protocols depending on the type and intensity of the pain. We use a number of different drugs including but not limited to local anesthetics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Metacam, Galliprant and Rimadyl, narcotic drugs such as Buprenex, Hydrocodone and Morphine. We also use Neurontin and Amantadine and other less commonly used drugs for pain.
